Numpueng
Numpueng’s first two solo exhibitions were held in 2006 and 2008 at the KLPac in Kuala Lumpur. Her paintings were originally conceived for the walls in her son’s room, but as friends got to know of Numpueng’s art, they too wanted it for their own children’s rooms. Her paintings are visual representations of love for her family and of life. The inspiration for her subjects comes from the daily activities she shares with her son, such as reading children’s books, watching films and playing with objects. She and her artist husband live and work in Kuala Lumpur.
The Paintings This new collection by the artist Numpueng of acrylic paintings continues to explore her fun-filled way of looking at the fundamental shapes in nature and emotionally responding to them. She melds these shapes into happy pictures depicting subjects drawn from a diversity of life on earth and in sea and sky. They come alive through her graceful use of bright shades and primary colours. At the base of her pictorial statements is the reassuring constancy of the circle of life. This is what makes the world go round. In Numpueng’s paintings, the world is beautiful, cheery and harmonious, and her subjects – be they butterflies or cows, mice or pigs – sport at least a hint of a smile. Once in a while, Numpueng’s world is also blessed with the appearances of princesses or angels, and they too would invariably be smiling. When you look at these paintings, you can’t help but feel that all’s well with the world.
